I last saw SESSION 9 back on it’s original release some twenty years ago propelled by the great reviews that it was attracting at the time. As was often the case back then I watched the film with two friends and spent most of the viewing fretting over whether it would be to their taste or not rather than relaxing and enjoying myself. However what I do remember was that director Brad (THE MACHINIST) Anderson’s movie was big on atmosphere, relentlessly building to a climax that I never saw coming.
Watching SESSION 9 again now I think that it’s shame that is not more widely known outside of die-hard horror circles. For my money it’s the best horror film released this millennium. Within its small but perfectly formed cast there’s enough character definition and plot arcs to ensure that there’s never a dull moment within it’s tight, creepy framework. Anderson also manages to take an all too familiar trope and gives it a spine-chillingly effective modern twist by employing an unsettling use of sound coupled with a location that is genuinely unnerving.
With the potential for different story interpretations oozing from it’s every pour it’s not surprising to learn that SESSION 9 has earned a cult following since its original release. This release has a number of deleted scenes which, unlike a number of other film’s deleted scenes, do actually add extra value and are definitely worth a view. So do yourself a favour and check out this absolute corker of a film and then join the debate as to whether it’s actually a possession flick or whether it#s about someone with a dissociative identity disorder. Enjoy!
