See David Howard Thornton transform from the Art the Clown to the tiny terror of New York in this horror that’ll make you shiver the next time you hear a squeak in the night. A group of New Yorkers are on a late-night ferry ride that turns deadly when a mischievous mouse begins a rampage, targeting unsuspecting passengers. The unlikely crew must band together to thwart the murderous menace before their relaxing commute turns into a nightmare.
Starring David Howard Thornton (Art the Clown in the TERRIFIER series), Kailey Hyman (TERRIFIER 2), Tyler Posey (TEEN WOLF), Jesse Posey (SELENA: THE SERIES), Jarlath Conroy (DAY OF THE DEAD), Jesse Kove (D-DAY: BATTLE OF OMAHA BEACH) and Brian Quinn (IMPRACTICAL JOKERS), and featuring creature designs from Christian Beckman’s Quantum Creation FX (THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER) inspired by designs from Christian Cordelia (AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER), SCREAMBOAT is written by Steven LaMorte (THE MEAN ONE) and Matthew Garcia-Dunn (SILENT HILL: ASCENSION) and directed by Steven LaMorte.
SCREAMBOAT is yet another in a recent stream of horror movies that are based on well-known and beloved characters that have recently entered the public domain. However, this is not the first to take Walt Disney’s Steamboat Willy, dump him into a slasher flick and then throw in assorted gory killings in the name of entertainment – see our recent review for I HEART WILLY. To date SCREAMBOAT is the more successful of this unnecessary glut of cash-ins, but it still falls short of the mark.
With a game cast, clearly defined characters and a welcome splatter of well-executed gore (pun intended), director Steven LaMorte’s movie has everything in place to be the first of its ilk to tick all the boxes. Frustratingly it gets close but still falls short of the mark. A tighter runtime and more gags that land would have made this more satisfying. As it stands, it is OK, it is not great but it is certainly an improvement on the others of this ilk that have preceded it.
