Train to Busan 4K UHD (2016) Review
A mysterious viral outbreak pushes Korea into a state of emergency. The government declares martial law just as divorced Seok-woo and his daughter catch the KTX bullet train from Seoul to Busan to see her mother. But someone on the journey has been recently infected, sending the hurtling carriages into complete chaos. As the living dead transform the voyage into a nightmare excursion, father and daughter and a small group of uninfected passengers must fight for survival. Get on board to stay alive!
Edgar Wright – director of SHAUN OF THE DEAD – called South Korean action horror film TRAIN TO BUSAN the “best zombie movie I’ve seen in forever.” It is hard to disagree! TRAIN TO BUSAN must easily rank as one of the best zombie flicks of all-time as well as one of the absolute best films released in the 21st century to date. Both a critical success and a box-office hit director Yeon Sang-ho’s fast-paced thriller is what the big screen adaptation of WORLD WAR Z should have been.
The film’s success paved the way for an animated prequel – SEOUL STATION (2016) – as well as a standalone sequel PENINSULA (2020) – both of which fail to match the impact or thrills of the original movie. There is talk of another sequel to come as well as an American remake (there is a surprise), but fingers crossed that the latter does not come to be.
If I were to have any niggle about TRAIN OF BUSAN it would be this. Some of the scenes that involve exclusively Dad – Fund manager Seok-woo – and his daughter – Su-an – proved too saccharine for my tastes. Aside from this wee complaint, the relentless zombie action and claustrophobic tension, combined with social commentary – think SNOWPIECER but with hordes of undead – and characters to root for – Sang-hwa and his pregnant wife Seong-kyeong being the standouts – make this one fast-paced trip that I urge to buy a ticket for.
