Actor/director Nicholas Vince is one of the UK’s shining beacons in the queer horror scene, most well-known for his debut role as the Chatterer in Clive Barker’s HELLRAISER, and Kinski (Moon Face) in the cult shocker NIGHTBREED, Vince took to the stage in 2019 with his autobiographical one-man-show I AM MONSTERS! Both a resoundingly nostalgic and relatable tale of growing up in love with horror, and an essential discourse on the turmoil of ‘growing up gay’ under draconian Thatcherian rule where the closet was always safest, his superb movie adaptation, had its World premiere at FrightFest in 2023.
I AM MONSTERS! charts Vince’s life from a monster-obsessed child, born undershot, through to an out of the closet actor, propelled to fame by Clive Barker’s ground-breaking films. He speaks openly about being a bullied outsider, the life-threatening operation to reconstruct his face, his battle with being gay in Thatcher’s Britain and reveals what it takes to be a Monster.
The Blu Ray extras will include four postcards, slipcover designed by celebrated graphic artist Gra-ham Humphreys, four short films written / directed by Nick, a four-page booklet. and an exclusive interview, hosted by Emmerdale star and Horror director / devotee, Dominic Brunt (BAIT, WOLF MAN-OR).

Written and directed by Nicholas Vince I AM MONSTERS is an adaptation of his autobiographical one-man show. Short and to the point there’s no unnecessary flab here as Vince recounts key moments in his life to date, from his wince-inducing childhood skull surgery, to being gay in Thatcher’s draconian Britain and of course, working with author/director Clive Barker.
Vince’s telling is both measured in its delivery and precise with the detail. Presented in chapters I AM MONSTERS takes filmed footage from his live show and intersperses it with the occasional animated segment and to-camera narration so that it remains lively rather than potentially static. It’s a wise choice.
For most of you I imagine that his anecdotes about working with Clive Barker on HELLRAISER and NIGHTBREED will be of most interest and Vince does not disappoint with the tales that he wished to tell. On a personal note, like Vince, I too felt like I did not fit in with society’s norm when coming of age in Eighties Britain. I was ashamed to be ‘out’, and I was afraid to admit to myself and others that I was a homosexual for fear of being ostracised. Hearing Nicholas recount this brought it all flooding back making my viewing of I AM MONSTERS more poignant in the process.
