Power Bear Issue One by Łukasz Majcher Review

Recently I was approached by my Facebook buddy Łukasz about the possibility of reviewing Issue One of his new superhero comic POWER BEAR. Initially I wasn’t sure that it would fit into the usual criteria of material we cover for the site. However he ended up convincing me that it would by saying that it does have elements of sci-fi within its DNA so I thought I’d give it a read.

POWER BEAR follows Max, an office clerk from Berlin, who finds himself in possession of superhuman abilities one day. This is not just a superhero comic, but also a story of tolerance and his struggle with mental health.

Written and illustrated by Łukasz with assistance with Stefan Paul, it’s a slight, undemanding read that mixes a superhero origin story that primes the titular character to go up against shape-changing ghastlies that are looking to eliminate all gay men. Within the superhero framework there’s also some social commentary about tolerance thrown in along with effective moments of humour.

It sets everything up well for the next issue and that’s effectively my own complaint, that just when things start kicking off proper you are left gagging for more, but then I suppose that’s the point, an effective cliffhanger poised to make you want to read the second issue.

I’ve written and promoted a couple of books in the past and I know that the level of commitment needed to get people to not only notice but buy your product can be exhaustive. You should be proud of yourself Łukasz for the effort that you’ve put in. Here’s looking to the next instalment.
