Dagr (2024) Review
The Matthew Butler-Hart directed horror-comedy will be available on digital platforms in North America, Australia and New Zealand from April 2. Through the genre label, which is part of Shaked Berenson’s Los Angeles-based worldwide sales and distribution company, Entertainment Squad.
The found-footage folk horror stars Duckles alongside Riz Moritz as fame-seeking YouTubers. Posing as caterers, they travel to an 18th century house where a glossy advert for a fashion brand is being shot and plan to steal from the production. But they unwittingly step into a haunted house, plagued by a demonic druid.
DAGR makes for the most agreeable British found-footage flick since 2020’s HOST. For the most part it’s both playful and fun and populated with characters that feel real. There’s none of the usual forced-feeling interactions between characters here that other found-footage flicks sag under. Instead, there’s a positively bouncy camaraderie between Thea (Ellie Duckles) and Louise (Riz Moritz) – our anarchist You-Tubers – that makes DAGR easy to watch and warm up to.
As with THE BORDERLANDS director Matthew Butler-Hart establishes as to why the cameras are placed and in doing so gives his film a credibility that others in the genre lack and provides a solid foundation for both the funny and spooky shenanigans that follow. Unfortunately, DAGR suffers the same fate, as most of the other flicks that populate this sub-genre do, by falling apart in its final moments, fumbling the scares, and succumbing to the tried and tested format that the rest of the film managed to avoid.
