Coyotes (2025) Review
Trapped in their Hollywood Hills home, a family fights for survival when caught between a raging wildfire and a pack of savage coyotes. Starring Kate Bosworth (Straw Dogs, Still Alice), Justin Long (Barbarian, Jeepers Creepers) and Brittany Allen (What Keeps you Alive, The Boys, Dexter: Original Sin), COYOTES is directed by Colin Minihan (Extraterrestrial, What Keeps You Alive, Grave Encounters, It Stains the Sand Red).
COYOTES is a comedy-horror that is crammed with enough decent chuckles and a few effective jump scares to ensure that you remained constantly entertained throughout. That’s not to say that everything works, for example there is a rat exterminator that is meant to be quirky but isn’t, but elsewhere in the cast Justin Long knows how to deliver the laughs, as do both Norbert Leo Butz and Brittany Allen as Scott’s uncouth neighbour Trip and his ‘special lady’ Julie respectively to compensate for any shortfalls in the film elsewhere.
The opening scene where foul-mouthed party girl Kat (Katherine McNamara) is talking on her mobile phone whilst walking her dog out for a walk only to find herself to be first on the coyote’s lunch list sets up things nicely and whilst there are no surprises when it comes to who else ends up as a hot meal for the coyotes, you really don’t care as you are having such a blast watching it. The story’s central family feel like a real family, helped in no small part by both Long and Bosworth being a couple in real life, and consequently you are routing for them all the way as they fight for survival against their furry, hungry four-legged adversaries.
Coyotes is available on Digital HD 29 December and Blu-ray & DVD 5 January. Distributed by Signature Entertainment
