The Deeper You Dig (2019) Limited Edition Blu-Ray Review
Bogus tarot card reader Ivy (Toby Poser) and her teenage daughter Echo (Zelda Adams) are an unconventional but loving mother/daughter team. But when reclusive Kurt (John Adams) moves in down the road, a tragic accident results in Echo’s murder, causing three lives to collide in mysterious and wicked ways. Kurt believes he can hide his secret beneath the earth – but Echo, refusing to accept death, burrows into his head until he can feel her in his bones. As she haunts his every move, trying to reach her mother from beyond, Ivy must dig deep to see the signs and prove that love won’t stay buried.
Unique supernatural flick THE DEEPER YOU DIG proved to be a smash hit with festival goers at Sitges, Fantasia, Fantastic Fest and Screamfest last year and, in my opinion, is an improvement on their previous flick THE HATRED (2018), which is included on this limited edition two-disc set, exuding more atmosphere and menace in its every frame. It’s a mixture of Edgar Allan Poe’s THE TELL-TALE HEART with some of PHANTASM’s DNA thrown in for good measure. By turns brilliant, eclectic, frustrating and haunting there really isn’t anything else quite like it out there in the genre or in filmmaking generally currently.
It’s easy to see why critics have fallen in love with this latest offering directed by and starring the Adams Family – dad (John Adams), mum (Toby Poser) and daughter (Zelda Adams) – and why the talented threesome are being lauded as ‘a force to be reckoned with’. It’s by no means perfect but then again what is, however there’s no denying that THE DEEPER YOU DIG is visual perfection laced with a haunting undercurrent that gets the best out of the central threesome at the core of this flick’s minimal story. It’s worth a look for those amongst you that relish the opportunity to try out something that offers a refreshing alternative to mainstream offerings and the chances are that you’ll take it to willingly too.
