THE BENEFACTRESS (An Exposure of Cinematic Freedom) (2025) Review

Director Guerrilla Metropolitana has been in regular correspondence with myself since reaching out to me to see if I would be interested in reviewing THE BENEFACTRESS (An Exposure of Cinematic Freedom), his latest film. I am up for anything so I confirmed that I would be happy to give his film a look and then put my thoughts about it online.

In corresponding with Guerrilla it was evident that he was very passionate about his film – and rightly so, he has much to be proud of and passionate about – and in the voice messages he left for me it also became apparent that he was keen for me to understand what his objective was when putting THE BENEFACTRESS (An Exposure of Cinematic Freedom) together, how it came about and his keenness to create something that would be ahead of its time, push boundaries and create a film without a conventional narrative.

Hearing that there would not be a conventional narrative struck a chord with me. As the recipient of several movies weekly for reviewing purposes, I see the same plot arcs played out repeatedly so having the very possibility of watching something without the standard template really appealed to me. Guerrilla was also very keen to stress that the film is not for all tastes – is anything? – and that the content is strong and may not sit well with some viewers. Was I deterred? Hell no! Instead, I thought ‘Bring it on!’

The film kicks off with the film’s protagonist Juicy X speaking to camera, detailing her previous association with Guerrilla and recalling how in their past association he had stuck a camera up her anus. She then takes her female ‘houseguest’ – co-star Mystery Woman – and repeatedly violates her in different rooms of the house, before the film’s director, who is very visible excited, he ends up joining Juicy X in physically and sexually assaulting their victim.

And that is THE BENEFACTRESS (An Exposure of Cinematic Freedom) in a nutshell. For the record I was never appalled or shocked by what unfolded onscreen – I am not sure what that says about me – but then I was lucky enough to be of an age to savour the lurid delights offered up to the public during the early days of the video cassette revolution and the Video Nasties furore.

Following such a baptism of sadism and violence even the more recent likes of 2010’s A Serbian Film and director Gaspar Noé’s brutal 2002 film Irréversible left me unaffected, so THE BENEFACTRESS (An Exposure of Cinematic Freedom) also left me similarly unphased. Be warned though, that will NOT be the case for everyone and there is a warning at the start of the film that is to be heeded if you are of a sensitive disposition.

Quirky, unsettling and rich with imagery that remains stuck in the brain – such as the brief clips of the film’s rich American investor Elektra McBride watching and enjoying the depravity unfold via live stream, wearing nothing but a gimp mask – Guerrilla’s flick is further enhanced by the bold, brave and committed performances from both Juicy X in the title role and her co-star Mystery Woman as her victim. A shout out to for Guerrilla himself bolding stepping in front of the camera and enhancing proceedings with his very revealing performance, literally!

THE BENEFACTRESS (An Exposure of Cinematic Freedom) is a near speechless spectacle, veering more towards experimental filmmaking with arthouse leanings and it’s to be applauded for offering up something completely different to the norm. It is not a film to be enjoyed in the conventional way; it is a film to be appreciated at an artistic level. By employing a contrasting visual palette, crisp black-and-white photograph juxtapositioned against Seventies porn film styled imagery, this tickled my sensibilities both on a visual and aural level.

Blending trippy, hallucinatory visuals with an organic approach to filmmaking – the performers literally go with the flow as the onscreen onslaught of depravity unfolds – this is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise congested marketplace where playing safe and formulaic is the norm and uniqueness often fails to find an audience. If that was to happen to THE BENEFACTRESS (An Exposure of Cinematic Freedom) then it would be a shame. Admittedly this film will prove hard going for many, it aims to be deliberately alienating and shocking and it is, however for those amongst you that have a taste for the oft-kilter, provocative and thought-provoking then this is one for you.
