The Curse of Hobbes House (2020) Review
After the death of her Aunt, Jane Dormant (Mhairi Calvey) travels to the family’s remote, ancestral home hoping to receive a large inheritance. When Jane’s estranged, half-sister Jennifer arrives at Hobbes House to claim her part of the estate, the sisters’ simmering hate ignites. But then a violent, unexpected storm cuts the estate off from outside help and a wave of bloodthirsty undead lays siege. Now the sisters have to learn how to fight back together.
By and large the zombie genre has run out of juice so imagine being faced with the prospect of sitting through yet another low-budget offering. It hardly filled me with joy. However I was in for a pleasant surprise as whilst Juliane Block’s flick may not exactly offer up much new it is far from another lazy dose of the undead. For starters the cast are a joy to watch and then there’s the added element of sibling rivalry gives it that gives this film the much needed oomph to stand out from the rest of an overcrowded pack.
Do not be swayed from seeing this by fellow online critics, especially those on IMDB. Those muppets simply yabber with grandiose self-importance hell-bent on slamming any movie simply for the sake of slamming a movie. I get that there’s not exactly a lot new on offer here but it is fun and that’s more than be said for a number of zombie flicks. What’s more it kept me watching and that’s refreshing in itself given some of the turgid movies out there currently doing the rounds.
Available to purchase from ASDA, Morrisons, HMV Online and Amazon 8th March 2021. It will also be available to download at iTunes, Amazon Video and from the Sky Store.
