Severin Films announces the Worldwide UHD Premiere of legendary director Jess Franco’s intoxicating 1971 revenge shocker She Killed in Ecstasy. The film is set to arrive in a new restoration, scanned in 4K from the original camera negative and will be released as a two-disc 4K UHD and Blu-ray Edition on 30 March 2026.

For his follow-up to VAMPYROS LESBOS, writer/director Jess Franco delivered the “hallucinatory descent into erotic insanity” (Mondo Digital) that remains his most perversely iconic shocker of the 1970s. In her greatest role – and one of her final performances before her tragic death – the exquisite Soledad Miranda stars as a vengeful widow who seduces and murders the men and women responsible for her husband’s suicide.

Howard Vernon (THE AWFUL DR. ORLOF), Paul Muller (LADY FRANKENSTEIN), Ewa Strömberg (VAMPYROS LESBOS) and Franco himself co-star in this Euro Cult masterwork “that truly shows what a creative genius Franco could be when he is at the top of his form” (Classic Horror).

Directed by the ever-provocative Jess Franco, She Killed in Ecstasy is emblematic of the filmmaker’s polarizing style. As with most of Franco’s work, audiences will likely fall into one of two camps: those entranced by his hypnotic eroticism and those left unmoved by what feels like empty spectacle. This West German–Spanish erotic thriller ultimately proves to be a revenge tale that barely registers as a thriller, relying more on sensual imagery than narrative momentum.

Shot back-to-back with Vampyros Lesbos, and featuring much of the same cast and crew, the film shares its predecessor’s lush aesthetic but lacks even that film’s pulpy reinvention of gothic myth. Whereas Vampyros Lesbos reimagined Dracula through a stylized lesbian vampire lens, She Killed in Ecstasy feels less inspired, liberally borrowing from Franco’s own earlier efforts, including The Diabolical Dr. Z and Venus in Furs. The result is a film that appears derivative, recycling familiar themes of obsession, revenge, and erotic fixation without deepening them.

At the center of the film is Soledad Miranda, whose performance leaves a stronger impression here than in Vampyros Lesbos. Miranda commands the screen with a chilling stillness—her piercing, deathly stare becoming a force of nature within Franco’s languid compositions. Even so, the film’s stilted dialogue and extended, meandering scenes often dilute her impact. Franco himself appears in a supporting role, further emphasizing the insular, repertory nature of the production.

Visually, the film is striking. Cinematographer Manuel Merino crafts glossy, sensual imagery that at times threatens to eclipse the narrative entirely. Yet beneath the polished surface lies little substance. The pacing drifts, tension rarely builds, and the revenge plot unfolds with minimal urgency.

Unlike contemporaries such as Jean Rollin, who infused erotic horror with a distinct poetic sensibility, Franco tones down traditional horror elements in favor of overt sensuality. The emphasis on abundant flesh over psychological or thematic depth reinforces the sense that the film functions primarily as exploitation rather than art.

In the end, She Killed in Ecstasy is all surface—stylish, seductive, and visually appealing, but dramatically hollow. For devotees of Jess Franco, its dreamlike eroticism may suffice. For others, it remains a cold, vapid exercise in style over substance, offering little beyond its provocative façade.
