A Serbian Film Ultimate Director’s Cut Coming Soon

Back in August 2010 the Film Four FrightFest, in London’s West End, was scheduled to screen A Serbian Film in its full uncensored glory. Films at the festival generally tend to be shown pre-certification however that was not to be the case for director Srđan Spasojević’s feature film début. Westminster Council refused to grant the festival permission for A Serbian Film to be exhibited until it had been classified by the BBFC. The film was consequently pulled from the schedule as screening a heavily censored version of any film was not in the spirit of the festival.

A Serbian Film, allegedly a political allegory, tells the story of a retired porn star down on his luck who accepts the offer of appearing in an art film. He soon discovers that the art-house porn he thought he had committed to is actually a snuff film that involves child rape and necrophilia. Given the subject matter and the graphic onscreen depictions of the acts, it’s hardly surprising that the film has subsequently been banned in several countries.

Stephen Biro, head of Unearthed Films, has recently announced that they have the US rights to A Serbian Film and that they will be releasing a director’s cut in the near future. Not seen the original cut of the film yet? As the title was not banned in the UK it’s available to buy from the usual outlets. We’ve included the film’s original 2010 trailer below to whet your appetites and in the meantime we’ll post further updates on the director’s cut release as and when they are announced.
