Revenge of the Boogeyman (2025) Review

Set against the eerie backdrop of a remote cabin in the woods, REVENGE OF THE BOOGEYMAN follows a group of friends on a weekend retreat to help one of their own overcome addiction. But their plans take a terrifying turn when a series of bizarre and horrifying events unfold, forcing them to face the chilling reality: the legend of the Ridgefield Boogeyman is all too real.

Billed as a spine-tingling comedy REVENGE OF THE BOOGEYMAN is unfortunately neither spine-tingling nor a comedy. It’s eighty-minutes spent with a handful of unlikeable characters that are unable to talk at a normal volume. The film is a near constant stream of noise, there is rarely a moment where the characters are not shouting or screaming or being loud by any other means. It becomes shrill and uncomfortable to sit down and listen to.

What further grates on the senses is the film’s score which feels the need to score scenes that don’t cry out for any accompaniment – such as when lead character Calvin (Morie McCarthy) frantically rummages around looking for cigarettes, and then later when he’s scrambling around looking for aspirin. (I could totally sympathise with Calvin’s need for aspirin, as by this point, he was not the only one with a headache).

REVENGE OF THE BOOGEYMAN, a follow-up to BEWARE THE BOOGEYMAN, has none of the ‘razor sharp humour’ or ‘terrifying suspense’ that the marketing blurb promises. Instead, there is a near-constant stream of shrieking and shouting that grates on the nerves. This endless barrage of noise was perhaps where the film’s humour was intended funny but for me it failed to hit the mark. Also, for a slasher there is little horror action, aside from the film’s opening moments and towards the end, to satiate any gorehounds that might tune in.
