Rani Rani Rani (2024) Review

Beware of the dangers of time travel in this thrilling sci-fi that sees a woman lured into a scientific experiment, resulting in a violent turn of events threatening to destroy her life as she knows it. Get ready to be transported through time with Rajaram Rajendran’s captivating sci-fi thriller RANI RANI RANI.

Filmed on a low budget and limited in location RANI RANI RANI is not your run-of-the-mill time travel flick. This is quite different from the crowd-pleasing antics of 1985’s BACK TO THE FUTURE or TV’s DOCTOR WHO. This aims for the more cerebral and leans more towards the arthouse and festival crowd rather than a general audience.

Written and directed for the screen by Rajaram Rajendran, RANI RANI RANI takes an age to find its groove however when it does it soars. This is mainly because of Tannishtha Chatterjee’s committed and feisty lead performance as Rani, a paid volunteer for a time-travel experiment that quickly spirals out of control.

Visually striking and with a great score this is worth sticking through the uncertain first half-hour or so. It can feel repetitive at times; however, Tannishtha Chatterjee remains engaging throughout and ensures that RANI RANI RANI remains watchable even when it sags or drags.
