Looney Tunes: The Day The Earth Blew Up (2024) Review

Animation, director Pete Browngardt, and the creative team behind the award-winning Looney Tunes Cartoons, Looney Tunes: The Day the Earth Blew Up, stars Porky Pig and Daffy Duck as unlikely heroes and Earth’s only hope when facing the threat of alien invasion. The movie unfolds a rich Porky & Daffy story that fans have never seen before: In this buddy-comedy of epic proportions, our heroes race to save the world, delivering all the laugh-out-loud gags and vibrant visuals that have made the Looney Tunes so iconic, but on a scope and scale yet to be experienced.
Admittedly Looney Tunes: The Day The Earth Blew Up is not exactly what you would expect to see reviewed on a site primarily concerned with horror and thriller flicks, however when the marketing company mentioned that there were review screeners available for this, I simply could not resist seizing the opportunity. We all need a laugh nowadays and I knew that both Porky Pig and Daffy Duck would deliver the goods.
Unlike other childhood favourites that have suffered when adapting their format for this modern age, Looney Tunes opts not to, instead keeping the formula exactly as it has always been, fast, frenetic and constantly inventive. Older viewers are likely to need a lie down after watching – I know that I did – whilst younger viewers will not feel the urge to once reach for their mobile device as the onscreen onslaught of visual gags and the cartoon’s fast pace will ensure that their attention is rapt throughout.
The villain reminded of MEGAMIND in appearance and for a Looney Tunes full-length cartoon with a sci-fi edge, it sadly lacks the presence of Marvin the Martian however unlike most feature-length cartoons that have expand upon the formula of ten-minute shorts Looney Tunes: The Day The Earth Blew Up never feels stretched nor outstays its welcome. And for an older person, like me, it’s pleasing to see 2D animation again in an age where generic computer animation flicks rule the box-office.
