Infrared (2022) Review

A paranormal investigator and his production crew gain access to a mysterious, abandoned school but when the thrilling haunt turns deadly, the team must race to uncover the terrifying truth before they become the school’s next victims.

Regular followers of our page will know that the ‘found footage’ genre is not one that I am a fan of. Sure, the likes of [REC] and CLOVERFIELD, amongst a handful of others, have proved that there’s life in an otherwise lazy format, but otherwise ‘found footage’ is overfilled with generic nonsense made with little or no reason aside from making a few bucks with minimal financial outlay.

On paper INFRARED would look to be yet another tired offering, featuring the all too familiar scenario of a TV team investigating a haunted location so my hopes for anything resembling a decent viewing experience were not high. However, for starters not only does this kicks off with an exorcism scene, not your usual start to ‘found footage’ flick, only to then later to follow it up with a decent scare scene involving one lone woman setting up a camera at the haunted establishment, INFRARED looked to be bucking the genre standard.

I also liked the idea of having scenes captioned to explain from which camera the footage came, a nice touch, and there’s another plus in the shape of charismatic lead character, Jesse Janzen’s Wes. So far so good, however, it’s not too long before too much talking mutes the effect and the horror element ends up taking a back seat to a squabbling brother and sister dynamic. Come the climax there’s again potential for a good scare but with the small cast doing nothing else but shout, cry and scream, any chance of that happening is drowned out by the headache they are causing.
