Bliss (2019) Review
Bliss (2019) Review
In need of creative inspiration, a professionally stagnant and hard-partying Los Angeles artist recklessly indulges in a series of drug binges. As the narcotics fly out of control, so does her newfound and inexplicable, yet unquenchable, craving for blood.
Described as a ‘Vampire Drug Movie’, writer/director Joe Begos’ BLISS is a grungy, colourful art-world based horror flick, that starts with a bang, bombarding the viewer with a myriad of bright colours – reds, greens and blues – and a loud, bombastic soundtrack. Channelling the likes of Fulci, Ferrera and Gaspar Noé, BLISS exhibits those director’s strengths but adds little of its own.
It soon becomes repetitive and as much as I was bowled over by the opening moments, and as much as I really wanted to like it, unfortunately there’s no one to root for and I need more than off-kilter camera angles, quick edits and terrific gore effects to make a film’s viewing work for me.
