Embryo (2020) Review
Kevin (Domingo Guzmán) and his girlfriend Evelyn (Romina Perazzo) are camping in the woods when she is abducted and impregnated by otherworldly beings. As the entity inside her begins to grow at a rapid rate, Evelyn’s cravings can only be satiated by the taste of human flesh. When she brutally attacks a doctor, they go on the run to the big city where they can find help to remove the embryo that is slowly taking over Evelyn’s body.
Chilean film-maker Patricio Valladares (HIDDEN IN THE WOODS, NIGHTWORLD: DOOR OF HELL) offers up, with his latest EMBRYO, a haphazard combination of three short tales revolving around extra-terrestrials that all take place around the ominously named Snowdevil Mountain, an apparent hotspot for other-worldly activity in Chile.
Originally intended as a pilot for a TV show, and shot for just 6,000 Euros, EMBRYO’s filming was interrupted by the ongoing pandemic. This would explain why the finished product is such an uneven muddle. It’s a shame that the makers decided to make the best of what footage they had rather than wait till it was safe again to recommence filming.
The main story concerns young couple Evelyn and Kevin whose camping trip to Snowdevil mountain takes a turn for the worse. One eventful night later and Kevin awakes to find Evelyn traumatised and covered in alien discharge. He does the right thing by taking her to see a doctor however little does he realise that she now has a penchant for munching human flesh. One dead doctor later and the couple are on the run.
However just as you begin to realise that you’re watching a distinctly lifeless mix of INSEMINOID and RABID, EMBRYO suddenly changes tact and we’re then saddled with the first of two found-footage tales both of which jar with what has preceded them. In fact it becomes such a mess that you kind of give up on wanting to watch especially when it looks like they’ve tried to beef up the running time with someone’s holiday footage. On the plus side the gore is well done however the pointless female nudity and muddled narrative otherwise make for a dissatisfying experience.
