The Curse of Willow Song (2020) Review

Willow Song, a recovering addict and parolee, struggles to start over. Willow finds herself in a concrete wasteland. Facing isolation and displacement, shadows creep into Willow’s mind and her nightmares become too real.

THE CURSE OF WILLOW SONG – Canadian writer, director, and co-producer Karen Lam’s second feature-length film – almost forgets that it’s a flick about a main character with significant supernatural leanings. For the most part Lam’s film sees the spookier elements take a backseat to the other issues that our lead characters Willow tackles such as discrimination, sexism and attempting to make a new life for herself as a former addict.

But that’s not a complaint! THE CURSE OF WILLOW SONG is compulsive and utterly gripping throughout. Anchored by a terrific lead performance from Valerie Tian and complemented by crisp black-and-white photographer, courtesy of cinematographer Thomas Billingsley, this feels ‘real’, it feels ‘grounded’ and you’re willing to go along with the lead character’s plight, and as you do, almost forgetting that it’s a supernatural flick that you tuned in to watch – but you kind of don’t mind that nothing supernatural for the most part is happening either. I think that makes sense…anyway, give it a look, you won’t regret it.
