When Beth (Keegan Connor Tracy) and Kevin’s (Sean Rogerson) eight-year-old son Joshua (Jett Klyne) develops an imaginary friend named ‘Z’, they think it’s cute… But they soon realize just how wrong they are. ‘Z’ becomes a terrible influence on Josh and their innocent son turns into someone they barely recognize. It’s only when Beth starts uncovering her own past, that she learns that Josh’s new friend ‘Z’, may not be so imaginary, after all.

‘Z’ is one of those viewing experiences where you’re so into the flick and it moves at such a pace that you don’t really notice the gaping plot holes until after. It’s one of those films where someone can suffer a brutal fall and, aside from a few tears shed at the time, there’s no follow-up, no police investigation or lawyers involved. Later there’s a house fire and the death of a major character that again appear to merit no immediate response from emergency services and the other key participants are free to go about their business as if nothing of any consequence has occurred at all.

‘Z’ is also one of those films where the mother witnesses everything and tries in vain to convince her husband that something REALLY BAD is going down with their only child, only to be met with constant disbelief on his part. So yeah, on paper writer-director Brandon Christensen’s ‘Z’ doesn’t read like a winner but that’s the thing, it is! It’s a really good Saturday night horror flick, by turns cheesy, scary and implausible. Like a decent trashy page-turner, it has all the right ingredients in place to enthral you throughout, just don’t expect it to hold up under scrutiny.
