WATCH THE SKIES follows the association, UFO Sweden, as they investigate supernatural phenomena. One day, teenage rebel Denise shows up with a case unlike anything they’ve seen before. Together, they embark on a risky adventure, which takes them far beyond the law’s borders and into a world of unexplained phenomena.
Bringing science fiction into the modern day, WATCH THE SKIES is also the first international feature film to be visually dubbed entirely using Flawless’ groundbreaking AI technology. The mouth movements of characters have been digitally altered to synchronise up with the English dubbing, making this a unique viewing experience.
Just days ago, I reviewed MONSTERS OF CALIFORNIA. MONSTERS OF CALIFORNIA is about a youngster whose father was obsessed with all things of an unexplained nature, including UFOs, and because of this obsession the father has gone missing, and the youngster is on the case with trying to locate them. So, within minutes of starting to review WATCH THE SKIES it was apparent that this story arc was in play yet again! Factor in that both films are set in the Eighties/Nineties rather than current day and things were shaping up to be remarkably similar, derivative, and release-wise too close together for comfort.
However, where MONSTER OF CALIFORNIA aimed for being charming and nostalgic and instead ended up overlong and irritating, WATCH THE SKIES is more affable and centres around a far more appealing lead. It has story elements that remind of the Matthew Broderick 1983 box-office hit WARGAMES, Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR and Nineties TV phenomenon THE X-FILES so, and as you have already gathered, there is not much new here. To be fair it’s not looking to break new ground but instead offer viewers a mildly diverting, if tonally uneven, family film however it might just lose the interest of younger viewers with its over-reliance on dialogue rather than incident.
