Vampus Horror Tales (2020) Review
Spanish horror anthology VAMPUS HORROR TITLES releases this February from Uncork’d Entertainment.
The films, featuring segments from Victor Matellano, Isaac Berrocal, Manuel Martínez Velasco, Piter Moreira and Erika Elizalde, are set on Halloween night. Vampus, a gravedigger and body snatcher, is the guardian of the cemetery, a sinister being who has many secrets. He loves to read horror comics, and introduces us to four twisted tales of love, murder, and assorted horrific acts.
This Spanish horror anthology, with English subtitles, opts for the comedy/horror route rather than going for “all out horror”, however with there being very little in the way of plot and with an unsurprising ending for each episode, left this reviewer wanting.
The killings are effective however they fast become much of a sameness leading to a disconnect with the viewer. What storyline there is makes little sense and despite there being attempts at psychological twists, the plotting still felt flat due to a lack of originality or substance.
For horror genre fans there’s nothing here you haven’t seen before prompting me to ask myself several times throughout this movie, “why did they bother?” I couldn’t figure out if this anthology was shot in black-and-white to add anything other than to hide the set design from the audience, as the production was very basic but not bad enough to take me out of the scene at any time.
On a positive note, if I had been flicking through channels on an evening and accidentally found this beauty, I would have stopped, watched from beginning to end, laughing out loud, mostly at how bad it was but laughing all the same.
