As Traitors fever sweeps the nation once more with the highly anticipated The Celebrity Traitors Series Two arriving this October, fascinating new feature documentary – Traitors: The Faithful Story – takes us behind the scenes to explore the shocking historical origins and cultural impact of this global phenomenon.

From renowned filmmaker Robin Bextor (Peaky Blinders: The Real Story, Nosferatu: The Real Story), and featuring in-depth interviews with series creator Marc Pos, TV experts and historians, Traitors: The Faithful Story is set to make its UK digital debut on 12 October, courtesy of Reel2Reel Films.

In 2022 a new reality series arrived on the BBC… the show – based on the 2021 Dutch series De Verraders – was The Traitors and no one could have anticipated the media frenzy that would follow… With every episode racking up millions of viewers and winning awards galore, the series has gone on to become one of the most watched British reality gameshows of all time, generating an abundance of memes, parodies and water cooler moments that are ingrained in British pop culture.

But behind the savage murders, spooky Scottish setting and Claudia Winkleman’s famed knitwear, The Traitors harbours dark roots stemming from a brutal tragedy that occurred over 400 years ago… In an exclusive interview, creator Marc Pos reveals how the murderous 17th-century mutiny on the Batavia served as inspiration for series, setting up the ultimate game of trust and treachery we now know to be The Traitors. Historians and TV experts explore the psychology, strategy and universal appeal at the heart of the much-loved series, dissecting how the ambitious concept led to one of the most successful entertainment franchises of the modern era.

Whether you’re 100 percent faithful or a newcomer to The Traitors franchise, this is a must-see for any TV or history fanatic, so grab your green cloak and discover Traitors: The Faithful Story.

Short and to the point, Traitors: The Faithful Story gets the job done. As a fan of the TV series who even applied to appear in the UK’s second season (I wasn’t selected, although I was invited to apply for the third, an offer I declined), I found this documentary’s exploration of the show’s origins particularly compelling.

Creator Marc Pos reveals how the grisly historical circumstances that inspired the concept eventually evolved into a global television phenomenon. Originally envisaged as taking place aboard a boat, with eliminated contestants jumping into the water, the format shifted to dry land after Pos drew inspiration from the gothic structures in which he once sang as a choirboy. Thus emerged the masked, silent figures and the suitably imposing castle setting.

The documentary also delves into the psychology behind the show, with experts explaining why the contestants’ personal interactions and conversations are far more compelling than the tasks designed to boost the prize pot. In an age of fake news, social media manipulation and politicians playing fast and loose with the truth, trust has arguably never been more important, or more difficult to establish.

As social creatures, we rely on others to get through life, making the discovery that someone within our circle is lying all the more unsettling. The show’s psychological games are its real strength, particularly when contestants confidently identify a traitor, only to discover that their reasoning was spectacularly wide of the mark. It also exposes our herd mentality and how easily we can be manipulated when everyone else appears convinced.

Fascinating both as an insight into the creation of a television phenomenon and as an examination of human behaviour, Traitors: The Faithful Story proves there is considerably more to the game than simply pointing fingers and hoping for the best.
