The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Season One (2024) Review
Post THE WALKING DEAD finale, lovers Rick Grimes and Michonne have been separated for many years by an unstoppable force. Five years after being taken by the Civic Republic Military, Rick has desperately been trying to escape to find his love. Michonne too, has been travelling far and wide, while fighting horrors far worse than the dead, in her unwavering, dangerous quest to be reunited with her soulmate.
Despite being deeply changed by the ever evolving and increasingly brutal world around them, one thing remains true; they haven’t stopped searching for each other. The duo will stop at nothing for their homecoming. But as they’re thrust into new landscapes and increasingly difficult challenges of new factions committed to waging war against zombies and humans, a peaceful reunion seems like an impossibility.
Before I deliver my verdict on THE WALKING DEAD: THE ONES WHO LIVE, I think that you should be aware that the whole WALKING DEAD phenomena left me cold. I could not warm to the original series. I was told by friends that I must stick with it, that it does get better, but alas, it was not to be. It was well-acted and produced but it is also a relentlessly glum human drama that too often veers towards cliché.
The same can be said for this recent spin-off, it is well-made but offers little or no surprises, characters are introduced, they die, and all too regularly and predictably too. You just know that when someone announces that she is pregnant that she will be dead before the season plays out, if not sooner, and she is.
When characters are not predictably dying, we are left in the company of loathsome self-absorbed characters who moan and squabble their way through the zombie apocalypse. This is what qualifies as must-see TV from Stateside nowadays.
Strip away the character interchanges there’s not much else story-wise. You yearn for the focus to change over to the zombies, admittedly they do not say a lot, but their moaning and groaning and shuffling is far more interesting than the soap-opera dramatics we have been presented with.
