Silent Hour (2024) Review

It’s silence or violence in this locked-down crime thriller starring Joel Kinnaman. A Boston detective suffers an on-the-job accident that leaves him hearing impaired. Sixteen months later, he and his friend and partner must battle a team of corrupt cops attempting to eliminate a deaf murder witness in the apartment building where she lives.

Starring Joel Kinnaman (THE SUICIDE SQUAD), Sandra Mae Frank (SOUL TO KEEP), Mark Strong (KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE), Mekhi Phifer (ER) and Michael Eklund (DIRK GENTLY’S HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY), THE SILENT HOUR is written by Dan Hall, his debut screenplay, and directed by Brad Anderson (SESSION 9).

It was not that long ago that THE SILENT HOUR’s lead actor Joel Kinnaman headlined action-thriller SILENT NIGHT where his character lost the ability to speak. With THE SILENT HOUR, his latest action-thriller, Kinnaman’s character is instead hearing-impaired. The concept of having a lead character up against the odds being hearing impaired, having his hearing aids about to lose power and no mobile phone to call for assistance does add that extra level to the tension.

This is a better-than-average crime flick that reminds of DIE HARD albeit with a much smaller budget and more shambolic building. Admittedly there’s little that’s new here but all the same it’s engaging, and it keeps you entertained right up to and including the very end. I didn’t expect to like it but finished watching it feeling that it was time well spent.
