The Reaper Man (2023) Review

A grieving wife summons a dark spirit with an insatiable desire for revenge in the chilling THE REAPER MAN, scheduled for a digital bow in April.

Written and directed by Lockridge, and starring Jessica Jai Johnson (“The Stix”), K.J. Baker (“NASHVILLE”), Kenon Walker (100 LIVES), and Jeff Halton (HONGO), the horror feature will be available April 18 on Digital Platforms.

THE REAPER MAN is the latest flick from Tennessee-based filmmaker Jason Lockridge, director of SUCCUBA and DOWN BAD: LIFE IN THE HOOD. Not only did Lockridge write and direct this supernatural tale he also acted as cinematographer, grip, editor, and executive producer. Such was the lowness of the film’s budget Lockridge could only hire a producer and make-up artist for the rest of his crew.

With numerous issues hampering the filming process – such as having locations he was not permitted access to till just before filming and actors not showing up – it’s amazing that the result plays as well as it does. However that said the pacing is rather slow and there’s little on show here that you have not seen before.

It’s an admirable effort considering the numerous limitations and it would certainly be interesting to see what Lockridge can concoct with a fuller budget at his disposal. As it is, THE REAPER MAN is watchable but not great and suffers from being unable to shake off or improve upon the likes of Bernard Rose’s 1992 CANDYMAN its closest stable mate.
