The Last Breath (2024) Review
Levi (Julian Sands in his final onscreen outing), a British expat diver, has been searching for the wreck of the USS Charlotte for his entire life. Assisted by US college graduate Noah, the pair may have finally made a breakthrough in the wreck’s location. Their crew expands after Noah’s college friends visit the duo, but as the group find themselves trapped in the darkness of the USS Charlotte’s interior, air rapidly running out, they discover that their dwindling oxygen supply is the least of their fears.
I am a sucker for a shark flick, perhaps this is down to the fact that I was just a wee lad when the box-office behemoth that was Spielberg’s JAWS was released in 1975. The impact of that film made a huge impression on me and consequently any shark flick that swam my way in the wake of that blockbuster was must-see. Sadly, for a film that includes a shipwreck and (unconvincing) sharks the excitement levels should be at sky-high levels rather than remain static.
It is solid and plays out well but at the same it is utterly unremarkable as it simply trots out the usual cliches. That said THE LAST BREATH is an improvement on some of the other miserable shark offerings that have come our way of late, but it falls short of hitting the right notes that the recent Netflix flick UNDER PARIS offered up, which was much, much more fun.
