Sweetie, You Won’t Believe It (2020) Review

Director Yernar Nurgarliyev brings us a splattering of blood, guts and laughter in an original and dark – yet hilarious – killer Kazakhstan thriller starring Daniar Alshinov and Asel Kaliyeva as bickering husband and wife, Dastan and Zhanna. Desparate for one last weekend of fun before his baby is born and he has to settle down, Dastan rounds up his two best pals for a boys’ weekend of fishing and fun, but little do they know their plan for a chilled trip to the lake is about to turn into mad and deadly mayhem.

After accidentally witnessing a murder by a group of thugs, the three friends are suddenly on the run to escape their violent clutches and then things turn even wilder. With a mysterious one-eyed man out for blood and a desperate wannabe bride and her pushy father in the mix, the body count starts to rise. Never mind fishing, will Dastan make it out alive and get to the hospital in time to witness the birth of his child?

SWEETIE YOU WON’T BELIEVE IT (original title: Zhanym, ty ne poverish) is a comedy-horror flick that melds elements of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE with THE HANGOVER and JOHN WICK. It sounds a tantalising combination and for the most part it is, however the constant shouting started to grate on my nerves after about half-an-hour and for all the wackiness on display I definitely felt that I was not the demographic that this film was aimed at.

The humour is constant and occasionally pays off with some laugh-out-loud moments and as for the gore there’s plenty of that too although oddly it’s the less bloody moment that involves a fish-hook and an ear lobe that made me wince the most. Had I been in my early twenties and enjoying a six-pack then you could easily add a few more stars to the rating otherwise there’s not much else here that you haven’t seen before.
