Rock, Paper & Scissors (aka Piedra, papel y tijera) (2019) Review

Jesús (Pablo Sigal) and María José (Valeria Giorcelli) are siblings living in a closed-off world constructed of strange games and relentless madness. When their half-sister Magdalena (Augustina Cerviño) returns home to inquire about her share of their inheritance, a strange and bloody affair ensues.

If you’ve seen MISERY then there’s really no need to watch this, Rob Reiner’s Stephen King adaptation does the bed-bound captive scenario so well that it’s rather fruitless trying on anything else like it for size. It’s a bit like expecting every shark thriller to be JAWS-level thrills or every demon possession flick to match the scares of THE EXORCIST.

Admittedly ROCK, PAPER & SCISSORS is well acted and well put together but there’s nothing new to see here and spending time watching hugely unlikeable characters get away with their nefarious deeds does not make for an entertainment watch.

MISERY’s Annie Wilkes wasn’t a one-note monster, she felt like a real human being, in directors Martín Blousson and Macarena García Lenzi we are lumbered with a couple of repellent siblings that are a chore to spend time with. It’s no WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? And instead of rising to the challenge of topping Reiner’s MISERY it just ends up as a miserable experience to sit through.
