Redwood Massacre: Annihilation (2020) Review

A stranger obsessed with the unsolved Redwood murders, convinces a group of bereaved family members to venture into the wilderness in hope of proving the existence of the infamous killer. Their quest for truth sees a sinister turn of events, as the hunters become the hunted. A blood-soaked fight for survival ensues when they find that the tales told of the axe-wielding manic is very real.

David Ryan Keith writes and directs this sequel to his 2014 slasher THE REDWOOD MASSACRE, a film that somehow and inexplicably passed me by at the time. On the evidence of this follow-up I’ll certainly be adding it to the top of my must-watch list because as far as sequels go this is a decent effort. Most sequels tend to be weaker than their predecessors so by that reckoning the original must be top drawer stuff given that this is far from the usual shabby efforts that dare to soil the reputation of a superior original.

So okay, it does meander in places and have a flabby midsection but otherwise it’s decently played and delivers the gory goodies. Danielle Harris brings the sass and attitude and the film concludes with an ending that is pleasingly unexpected. There’s plenty of yucky stuff, which includes an early scene of necrophilia, and later scenes of victims getting their heads ripped off. There’s also a subtle visual nod to fellow Scotsman Lawrie Brewster’s The Owlman from LORD OF TEARS to keep an eye for. REDWOOD MASSACRE: ANNIHILATION is a bloody and choice slice of slasher mayhem that’ll make for a perfect evening’s viewing for the gorehounds amongst you.
