Monster X (2017) Review
Monster X (2017) Review
Don’t be fooled by the poster image! It gave this reviewer the impression the film would be about one man taking on a hoard of assorted monsters and ghouls in the vein of Jack Brooks Monster Slayer (2007). It’s not that kind of movie at all. It’s better, much better. Firstly Monster X is an anthology, which is something this reviewer was not aware of upon viewing, and was not immediately made apparent either. Monster X is about a young couple attending a horror film festival for their first date only everything is not what it seems.
With banshee-madness, werewolves and vampires to feast on Monster X proves to be an unexpected delight. Sure it’s not great but it IS fun – something the horror genre, on the whole, has forgotten to be. The effects work is lacking but then this is not a big budget film, however it is rich where it counts with neat twists and novel ideas. It’s rare that an anthology impresses me and I ended up loving each tale, there wasn’t one that rang a bum note. The weakness with Monster X comes from the bridging segments involving the young couple on their first date. These segments jar a little in tone to the rest of the film but this can be forgiven as everything wraps up nicely with yet another killer punchline.
In short Monster X is the sort of unexpected delight that makes the task of being a film critic more of a joy.
