Monster Force Zero (2020) Review

After their comic book dreams are crushed, a group of sci-fi cosplayers are granted superpowers and are transported into the multiverse to do real battle with evil alien forces bent on earth’s destruction.

MONSTER FORCE ZERO reminded me of Edgar Wright’s SCOTT PILGRIM VERSUS THE WORLD but lacked the zing that that film displayed in its numerous comic-book-styled face-offs. It’s also comparable to THE LAST STARFIGHTER in terms of its plotting and set-up. However in THE LAST STARFIGHTER I could see why the lead character was enlisted to help out with a real space battle as he had displayed the necessary skills through his arcade machine game play. Simply because folks dress up as genre characters and attend events where others do the same doesn’t really mean that these are the guys to call upon to battle an alien nemesis.

MONSTER FORCE ZERO plays as a love letter to cosplayers, and comic con events, and has a warm, fuzzy retro-feel to it complete with a throbbing, energetic synth score and comic-book-styled primary colours. Crowdfunded on Indiegogo, there’s plenty of enthusiasm from the cast’s performances but little in the way of tonal changes which means that unfortunately everything plays at the same energy level, never really shifting gear when the onscreen action cries out for it to do so.
