MaXXXine (2024) Limited Edition 4K UHD Review

Modern horror icons Mia Goth (FRANKENSTEIN, INFINITY POOL, SUSPIRIA) and Ti West (THE SACRAMENT, THE INNKEEPERS) reunite for a glamorous, gritty and gore-filled conclusion to the acclaimed X trilogy with MaXXXine, which now receives a star studded new Limited-Edition Box Set release from the best in the business, Second Sight Films.

Goth once again cements herself as a magnetic screen presence with her show stopping performance as Maxine Minx. This seductive horror that pays tribute to Italian Giallo and eighties cinema with its satanic panic, pulp, seedy PIs, corrupt cops, thrilling showdowns and a visual feast of fluorescent colours.

Lauded by The Hollywood Reporter as ‘a gleeful dive into retro movie tropes with vivid period evocation’ the film has gone on to become the highest-grossing film of the trilogy, and now MaXXXine Limited Edition 4K UHD Box Set is set to arrive on 17 November, alongside a Standard Edition.

Mia Goth returns as Maxine Minx and this time she is an adult film star in 80s Los Angeles trying to cross over to the mainstream by starring in a new horror film, but her past soon catches up with her and friends and colleagues start turning up dead. Written, directed, produced, and edited by Ti West MaXXXine is the third and final film in West’s ‘X’ trilogy, and a direct sequel to 2022’s original ‘X’. Unfortunately, it proves to be the least satisfying film of the three, although it proved to be the more financially successful at the all-important box-office.

On a visual level West’s film is on a par with the previous two however its promise of a serial killer flick shaped by the aesthetic of the late Seventies/early Eighties plays out as more style and less substance. There is a great cast, the songs from the period on the film’s soundtrack are choice – Animotion’s ‘Obsession,’ Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s ‘Welcome to the Pleasuredome’ – but otherwise this comes as a disappointment, and the horror elements are limp. MaXXXine feels like it is coasting rather than matching the standards of what came before.
