In reviewing this double pack combo I had it in mind that I had already seen the 1993 original that is included. I hadn’t. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a lot more fun than I would have ever have anticipated. Jennifer Aniston – starring before her big break arrived in the form of TV’s Friends – makes for an engaging lead, basically playing, well Jennifer Anniston. It’s all bright colours, almost akin to the styling associated with a kid’s flick, but isn’t afraid to dollop out the gore in nicely liberal doses. However, I have to say that as much fun as I found this original flick to be, it’s still not as much fun as LEPRECHAUN RETURNS which is funnier, gorier and a welcome return for a franchise long since given up on.
LEPRECHAUN RETURNS – When the sorority sisters of the Alpha Upsilon house decide to go green and use an old well as their water source they unwittingly awaken a pint-sized, green-clad monster. The Leprechaun wants a pot of gold buried near the sorority house, but first he must recover his powers with a killing spree – and only the girls of the AU can stop him.
Originally made for TV LEPRECHAUN RETURNS is an absolute joy, a sequel that betters the original. It’s crammed with giggles and over-the-top gory killings. It doesn’t matter that the newer characters make little impression as the film is primarily a showcase for the titular character and Linden Porco – taking over from Warwick Davis as Lubdan, the leprechaun, excels, clearly relishing the opportunity afforded him. As with the recent Halloween reboot, Leprechaun Returns is a direct sequel to the original film and ignores all of the sequels. As reboots go Leprechaun Returns is one of the best, trumping even the guilty pleasures of the original film. It bodes well for any further instalments in the franchise.
