Jakob’s Wife (2021) Review

Anne (Crampton – Re-Animator, From Beyond) lives in a small town and is married to minister Jakob (Larry Fessenden The House of the Devil) but, after 30 years, life is rather dull and she yearns for something more.

Following a chance encounter with ‘The Master’ she discovers bite marks on her neck and suddenly an overwhelming sense of power and an appetite to live bigger and bolder than before consume her. But Anne soon discovers these changes come with a heavy burden… An ever-increasing body count and a serious toll on her marriage.

With both Barbara Crampton and Larry Fessenden headlining, director Travis Stevens’ middle-aged vampire horror-comedy JAKOB’S WIFE looked to be shaping up to be a very tasty offering. Both actors have terrific genre form and are always a welcome addition to any flick that commit to performing in. However Travis Stevens (director of the more agreeable GIRL ON THE THIRD FLOOR) has shaped a rather dissatisfying flick whereby the viewer ends up having less fun than everyone involved evidently had making it.

On the plus side there’s a supporting role for Robert Rusler, who notably appeared in cult Eighties Grace Jones flick VAMP, as well as the homoerotic A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY’S REVENGE, and additional eye candy in the form of C.M. Punk (shown in the cast as Phil Brooks) as Deputy Colton. For the most part I have embraced Shudder’s offerings but somehow this vampire oddity just didn’t sit well with me and tonally missed both the comedy and horror mark.
