18 years ago A burglar broke into an author’s house. He comes across a computer with all his secret stories. One by one he reads them and slowly is drawn into the terror of each one. Now the Burglar played once again by JOEL D. WYNKOOP is back his old tricks and once again breaks in a house with stories to be told. This time he is taunted by a man who promises to take him to hell and back and make him pay for past evil deeds.
I sat down to review HORRORTALES.666 PART 2 after the producer contacted us to see if we would be running a review. I explained that I was reluctant to do so given that three of our reviewers had all submitted negative verdicts. He was fine with that, however I still wasn’t happy to do so as I like to support independent fare rather than help bury it so rather than run with one of the reviews that had been submitted I thought I’d have a look myself.
What was apparent from the reviews submitted was that the film’s final segment ‘My Life’ undid much of the good work up until then and that also the variable sound quality for the wraparound story was an issue. I would concur on both points but otherwise my critique overall is far less harsh. There’s actually a lot to recommend here. For starters the acting is much better than you’d expect from a lower-budget flick and a couple of stories, especially ‘Slay Ride’ involving Santa Claus, work a treat.
It’s gory, kinda sleazy and a welcome relief from the more norm especially ‘The Present’ which also surprised me with its frank approach. The problem comes with the final segment of this five story anthology – ‘My Life’ – where numerous people phone up wanting to star in HORRORTALES.666 PART 2. It goes on a bit and makes for an uncomfortable bedfellow with everything else that preceded it. Aside from that there’s a lot of fun to be had and it’s one of the better anthologies I’ve seen in awhile irrespective of budget.
