Diamond Sky (2025) Review

Felix Mackenzie makes his directorial debut with DIAMOND SKY, which combines a heist movie with a fractured love story, which takes a twisted turn. The film makes it UK debut on digital 27 October 2025, courtesy of Reel2Reel Films.

TV favourite Amanada Abbington (SHERLOCK, MR SELFRIDGE, THE LOST KING) stars as the realist mother of Alice (Elena Rivers – BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT THE BOY, F1), a young dreamer who desires a prince, but falls for a pauper and sees riches in his rags.

A love story, a heist thriller and a psychological portrait, DIAMOND SKY is an original new feature from a filmmaker, which explores the perilous beauty of desire and the danger of fantasy becoming more seductive than life itself.

Leaning heavier towards the storyline’s ‘romance’ element than ‘thriller’ DIAMOND SKY really needed to convince in that latter department to work but instead it bamboozles and frustrates. Lucan is borderline stalker-material, in love with the idea of being in love rather than knowing what love is and as for Alice, well, Alice hardly ever seems or gets warm and fuzzy with Lucan. Instead, they smash plates, fall out with each other, and provide more drama than there is in an omnibus edition of TV’s EASTENDERS and little to convince me that they are romantically inclined toward each other.

As for the ‘thriller’ aspect it barely meets the criteria, there is a heist, but there is no build-up, no tension, and no suspense. There are flights of fancy that want to be enchanting but instead feel out place amongst the lifeless performances. DIAMOND SKY’s poster image is compelling, and it certainly suckered me in. However aside from the film’s ever-present score and the crisp camerawork, both adding polish to a storyline that often lacks coherency, it failed to deliver on its opening moments and consequently I was left wanting.
