Blood Star (2024) Review

This dark survival thriller is directed by Lawrence Jacomelli and stars Britni Camacho (I’M A VIRGO) and John Schwab (MASTER OF THE AIR). Additional cast include Sydney Brumfield, Travis Lincoln Cox, Felix Merback & Wyomi Reed.

A young pickpocket is driving cross country back to her abusive boyfriend when she is targeted by a small-town Sheriff who shoots her off the road. A deadly game of cat-and-mouse ensues and she must use her street-smarts to survive.

Lawrence Jacomelli, making his directorial debut with BLOOD STAR, has put together a solid if unremarkable thriller, that looks great, is well photographed and in both Britni Camacho, as the terrorized driver Bobbie, and John Schwab as the bad guy cop, he has two charismatic performers to help left this above the usual independent film standard. What’s more remarkable is that the whole thing was shot in just ten days!

BLOOD STAR kicks off strong, with spunky Bobbie facing up to the small-town Sheriff who is constantly on her tail. However, once roadside diner server Amy (Sydney Brumfield) jumps into Bobbie’s car and the two start to chat and bond BLOOD STAR shifts down a gear and slowly starts to grind to a halt. Characters are introduced or fleshed out for no other reason than to be killed off at some point soon after. The last hour of BLOOD STAR should have been sitting pretty above a crescendo of tension that had built up before, instead it slackens and limps to a crawl rather than end with the expected bang.
