Battle in Space: The Armada Attacks (2021) Review
A series of action-packed sci-fi shorts, Battle in Space: The Armada Attacks features the work of Sanjay F. Sharma, Toby Rawal, Scott Robson, Andrew Jaksch, Lukas Kendall, and Luis Tinoco. Each film, though a separate story, includes a wrap-around through line.
In 2420, after aliens and powerful space wizards have enslaved human villages, a group of resistance fighters organize a counterattack against their alien overlords and launch an armada of spacecraft in a battle for supremacy in space.
BATTLE IN SPACE: THE ARMADA ATTACKS is a sci-fi anthology film featuring a series of sci-fi shorts directed by Andrew Jaksch, Lukas Kendall, Toby Rawal, Scott Robson, Sanjay F. Sharma. and Luis Tinoco. To their collective credit they do an admirable job of squeezing their low-budgets for every cent’s worth in terms of what they can achieve onscreen however I was left yearning for shorts that grabbed the attention and stood out from the crowd rather than fit in with it.
The film’s marketing blurb focuses on actor Doug Jones starring but he’s literally in it for just a couple of minutes otherwise it’s populated with faces that are by-and-large unknown to general audiences but, fortunately, for the most part they acquit themselves well. The niggle I have, and it’s a major niggle, is that everything that features is distinctly average and I also failed to see much in the way of connectivity between the stories, aside from their sci-fi leanings.
I yearn for the days when upcoming film-makers actually made their mark within the short film market and standing out from the rest of the pack. Unfortunately everything here feels like a regurgitation of themes both visually and within the storylines that we’ve sat through before. Nowadays it seems that everyone wants to play it safe and rather than come up with their own ideas instead turn in safe offerings that fail to stand out from the pack.
