Abominable (2019) Review

A research team embarks on a journey to obtain a plant that can advance medical research by centuries. While stumbling upon clues of the previous expedition, they discover that a Yeti creature lurks within the Himalayan mountains and will do anything to protect its terrain.

Not to be confused with the recent animated film of the same title ABOMINABLE is a low-budget B-movie monster flick that delivers high on the gore factor if proving rather lacking on a decent beastie. The acting – for the most part – is decent and the pacing agreeable. The film’s climax is mishandled and comes across amateurish in comparison to what has preceded it but overall this is a must for gore hounds and lovers of monster movies.

There are moments that cause unintentional chuckles such as when a character shouts out for help but when his walkie-talkie springs into life he tells advises the caller ‘don’t come out here’ – does he actually want help or not? Elsewhere points are laboured such as seeing character’s breath as they enter the abandoned work station to emphasize that it is freezing whereas rather oddly outside in the snow there’s no visible breathing out at all.

Like most low budget flicks the film’s score never stops harping on but here it works in the film’s favour given the build-up of tension required. The film’s sound is rather iffy in a couple of places and there’s the odd moment when a scene cuts between daytime shots and early evening for no apparent reason. It’s definitely not filmed in the Himalayas but rather in some woodland in the States but so what. ABOMINABLE is a lot of fun, short, to the point and crammed full of crazy gory death sequences.
