The Return (2020) Review

Rodger (Richard Harmon) returns home from college with two friends to settle the affairs of his recently deceased father. They begin to experience weird and unsettling occurrences in the house. Rodger is soon plagued by strange childhood memories about a haunting by a ghostly presence. These memories boil over into reality culminating in an intense showdown with the terror that has come back.

There’s nothing particular wrong with THE RETURN, the acting is fine, the direction is fine, the film’s aesthetic works, it’s just that there’s nothing particularly new here. That’s not to say that unusual and unexpected things do happen but when they do the people to which they happen never really seem to mind, let alone get freaked out about it. I was also confused by the dynamic between the three leads as to whom Richard Harmon’s character was actually meant to be dating.

As haunted house flicks go it’s okay, it’s watchable, it’s not rubbish but just distinctly average. There is a twist that does kind of perk things up a bit but only for a short while before proceedings settle back down into being run-of-the-mill. Winner of Best Feature at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival, and Best Actor (Richard Harmon) at the New York City Horror Film Festival, THE RETURN premiered August 10 On Demand/Digital from Uncork’d Entertainment.
