Shark Encounters of the Third Kind (2020) Review

A group of hostile aliens crash land at the bottom of the ocean, and via mind control use sharks to terrorize a small town full of secrets in the hopes of completing their invasion mission. It’s up to a disparate group of townspeople to sort it out, but in the end it’s sharks versus aliens in a surprising climax.

SHARK ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND was received by me to review at the same time that I received another B-movie with dodgy effects work. The other movie played up to its B-movie premise and revelled in its subpar special effects work and received a positive review. SHARK ENCOUNTERS director Mark Polonia’s movie elected to play its daffy premise straight instead, a choice that totally didn’t work for me. But that’s not the only issue that I had.

Even before the opening credits had started to roll I was already scratching my head as to what exactly was going on and I was left feeling perplexed for the rest of the movie too. There’s little in the way of sense and far too many characters crammed into the film’s short running time. Aside from a committed cast and an enthusiastic score there’s very little else here to recommend. This odd amalgamation of two classic Spielberg movies – JAWS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS – from the writer and director team behind JURASSIC PREY lacks a coherent structure and unfortunately doesn’t even have the potential to be a great ‘bad’ movie, instead it’s just ‘bad’.
