Coven (2020) Review

Five undergrad witches come together in order to perform a ritual to invoke the ancient powers of the witch Ashura. The leader of the coven gets carried away and accidentally kills one of the witches during the ritual. She needs the strength of a complete coven to invoke Ashura’s powers and sends them out to find a final witch. As she absorbs power the surviving girls plot to take her down but the possessed witch unleashes hell on campus with only one young witch left to stop her.

COVEN is described in the marketing blurb as ‘THE CRAFT meets SUSPIRIA’ and whilst it veers more towards the former than the latter-named flick – original and remake – it’s a commendable effort that transcends its low-budget origins, aside from the occasionally iffy special effect. It’s energetic, neatly paced and well acted if a little lacking in originality.

Directed by Margaret Malandruccolo and written by the film’s star Lizze Gordon, COVEN tells a familiar story so it may not score points with older and more jaded film fans and critics. However for its intended younger target audience there’s plenty here to thrill to. In fact if it wasn’t so familiar feeling I am sure that my score would have been higher, so if you’re a teen or younger adult then add a couple of points to this rating.
