The Price We Pay (2022) Review
When a pawn shop robbery goes horribly wrong and the criminals take a young woman, Grace (Gigi Zumbado – BRIDGE AND TUNNEL), hostage, things quickly go from bad to unimaginable. Forced to go on the run, they head into the woods and as darkness starts to fall, they find a remote farmhouse and decide to take refuge. But they get way more than they bargain for…
This is no ordinary farm, it hides a sadistic dungeon and something far more sinister… And when the family return home, hellish mayhem breaks loose and it’s an all-out bloody gorefest. Can Grace find a way to escape the clutches of true evil or will she and her captors pay the ultimate price in THE PRICE WE PAY?
Stephen Dorff and Emile Hirsch are two of the better younger actors around, both can normally deliver above the standard of some of the material that they have starred in and both have a couple of jewels in their crown – Dorff excelled as ambitious vampire Deacon Frost in 1998’s BLADE and Hirsch matched Brian Cox scene for scene in the terrifying THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE. However neither of these charismatic actors can save THE PRICE WE PAY from being a lifeless mishmash of crime thriller and horror.
It plays out like a lower-budget of 1996’s FROM DUSK TILL DAWN which is great for fans of director Robert Rodriguez’s vampire flick but not for the likes of myself who hated it with a passion. Director Ryuhei Kitamura (MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN) brings the gore and the gross-out but otherwise this flick is far from as smart as it thinks itself to be. It’s too flatly delivered to ever be thrilling and as impressive as the gooey gore is there’s next to nothing here to recommend or get excited about.
