The Lizzie Borden Game (2025) Review

After the sudden and suspicious death of her parents, Emily (Airisa Durand) joins friends for a secluded Friendsgiving re-treat at a sprawling gothic castle. But when they dare to play a strange local ritual known as THE LIZZIE BORDEN GAME, the spirit of the in-famous axe murderer is summoned… and the blood starts flowing.

Star-ring Jason Brooks (FRIDAY THE 13th: VENGEANCE), Laura Wilson, Jessica Noel Thompson, and Chynna Rae Shurts as Lizzie Borden, the film is packed with supernatural thrills, pitch-black humour, and campy carnage that fans of classic horror will eat up.

Low-budget independent horror flick THE LIZZIE BORDEN GAME screams out for something extra to elevate it from being one-note. Both the film’s dialogue and plot are repetitive as lead character Emily voices her concerns that something feels very wrong only for the other characters repeatedly dismiss her warnings, that is until bloody carnage erupts and proves that Emily was right.

Initially I was thrilled at the brutality and goriness of the axe-murders, if not entirely convinced by how the severed or smashed in heads looked, however as with every other ingredient in the film’s mix the axe-murder scenes too fast become samey and protracted thus nulling their effect. There are elements that remind of CANDYMAN, HALLOWEEN and EVIL DEAD but all that does is remind the viewer that there are far better films that they can be spending their time watching.
