The House at Hallow End (Aka The Beldham) (2024) Review
Nothing is more constricting than a familial bond in this supernatural horror. Single mother Harper moves in with her own mother to renovate their fading suburban farmhouse. Before long, Harper finds herself haunted by a threatening presence that seems to desire her infant child.
Starring Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond), Katie Parker (The Fall of the House of Usher), Emma Fitzpatrick (Take Back the Night) and Corbin Bernsen (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), The House at Hallow End is written and directed by Angela Gulner.
Writer and director Angela Gulner’s psychological horror has been winning rave reviews. There is a sense of foreboding which is sustained and maintained throughout, and the performances are spot on, so why you might ask have I only afforded THE HOUSE IN WILLOW PARK a middling score. The film is well put together but I felt that I had seen it all before, and yes, even the late twist did little to shake off the familiarity of it all.
There are elements of both 1968’s ROSEMARY’S BABY and 2014’s THE BABDOOK in the mix, and by reminding one of two infinitely superior movies it only served hampered its impact upon me. On its own merits and if I had not seen the aforementioned movies then perhaps, I too would have been raving about it. For a horror film freshman this will hit the spot nicely, for those more well-versed in the genre you might find yourself entertained but itching for something fresher feeling.
