The Coming of Sin (1978) Review

In 1978’s The Coming of Sin (La Visita del Vicio, in its native Spanish), a young gypsy girl experiences a violent sexual awakening as her dreams of a naked young man on horseback become reality.

As with Whirlpool, also featured in the same box-set release, The Coming of Sin has languished in obscurity until now previously proving difficult to obtain a copy of. Also known as The Violation of the Bitch (1978), Secrets of the Bitch and La visita del vicio (original title) director José Ramón Larraz’s movie was originally cut by the BBFC to obtain a theatrical release. It was a tremendous success in the UK. The theatrical cut’s running time was a meagre seventy minutes rather than the ninety-three minutes it clocks in at for this retail release.

The copy provided for reviewing purposes was dubbed from Spanish into English. The dubbing proved rather farcical as the voicing choices made didn’t really fit with the characters. The copy’s picture quality was a bit iffy, leaning heavily on soft focus in places for the sexy bits which aren’t really that sexy at all. The Coming of Sin is an erotic thriller that entirely fails to thrill and proves nonsensical to the point that it all becomes a bit of a giggle.

There’s a young guy who rides around naked on a horse (he says this makes it easier to grip the horse!) and no one locally seems to mind or complain, instead women approach him without any suspicion and then seem surprised when he pounces upon them for sexy stuff. There’s also some mumbo jumbo about a servant girl, who works for an artist (that we never see producing any art), that dreams about the naked man (who wouldn’t?) and is told by a fortune teller that there if she sleeps with the men the repercussions will result in someone dying!

Who writes this crap? As with Larraz’s other movies The Coming of Sin is well filmed but rather pointless, just another slim excuse for a plot to hang scenes of naked naughtiness upon. The film ends abruptly, finishing up on a point that I felt actually merited a proper story, something the film had lacked for its previous ninety minutes. Worth checking out for a chuckle.

THE COMING OF SIN is featured in the forthcoming release BLOOD HUNGER: THE FILMS OF JOSE LARRAZ BLU-RAY released 25th March 2019.
