SUMMONING SYLVIA (2023) Review
SUMMONING SYLVIA follows a gay bachelor party which takes a spooky turn when the groom’s straight ex-military brother crashes the proceedings and sinister spirits are summoned.
SUMMONING SYLVIA was directed by Wesley Taylor (a Broadway veteran known for ROCK OF AGES and THE ADDAMS FAMILY) and Alex Wyse (returning to Broadway this season in GOOD NIGHT OSCAR), making their directorial debuts, which they also wrote together.
The directors see their film as a celebration of queer friendship and as a story that explored the assumptions that we make of each other. The idea for the film was born during the early days of the pandemic and what started as a project to pass the time while theaters were closed, ended up as a “very timely and hilarious film”, their words.
SUMMONING SYVLIA has assembled a game and likeable cast to carry that perfectly complements the film’s infectious mix of humour and scares. It doesn’t always quite hit the targets it sets for itself but when a film feels as instantly likeable as this one, then it’s easy to overlook the occasional flaw. In writing this review I am finding that I still have a smile just thinking about SUMMONING SYLVIA so check it out, it’s a lot of fun.
