Red Rover (2018) Review
Damon (Kristian Bruun) spends his waking hours searching for that elusive something. Whether it’s for deeper meaning, love, or just “treasure” on the beach with his metal detector, but to no avail. So when Damon meets an offbeat musician named Phoebe (Cara Gee) handing out flyers for a one way trip to Mars, a bond quickly forms. She’s going to help him find that thing he is looking for by sending him 33.9 million miles away, even though what he needs might be right in front of him.
First off RED ROVER is not the usual type of film that we review here at My Bloody Reviews. It’s not a horror film; it’s not a cult movie nor is it a sci-fi flick – although it does have plot elements that lean towards a sci-fi bent. RED ROVER is a romantic comedy, not in a laugh-out loud kind of way but instead warm, fuzzy-feeling and totally likeable. In fact, given our current lock-down status with the coronavirus pandemic, it’s exactly what the world needs right now and with that in mind, given it’s not our usual type of film for the site, we thought it deserved a mention on our page.
Kristian Bruun, as our lead character Damon, has an endearing, likeable everyman quality to him that helps steer the viewer through the occasional moment in the film that doesn’t quite add up. Stumbling around the emotional minefield that is his life, like a clumsier Clark Kent lookalike, you just want to give this big bear of a man a huge hug. In fact such is the spell that Mr Bruun casts over viewers that even his derriere has a Twitter account, no really, it’s called Kristian Bruun’s Bare Bum.
Bruun is matched in the charm department by Cara Gee as Phoebe. Like Bruun she is utterly disarming and their combined dynamic is one of the best screen-couplings of recent years. Directed and co-written by filmmaker Shane Belcourt RED ROVER leaves you charged with a warm, vibrant glow, delivering a much-needed slice of feel-good at a time when that’s exactly what everyone needs.
