Jurassic Thunder (2019) Review

When a covert desert base is forced to divert World War III against a formidable adversary, a group of commandos and weaponized dinosaurs are hired to get the job done.

JURASSIC THUNDER looks to establish its comedic tone from the word go. Remember that old THX sound demonstration that used to open movies? Well here we have Jurassic Thunder ZHX Zombie Sound. The sound demonstration is basically that of zombies groaning in that bog standard undead way of theirs. Immediately after this we are advised that ‘the audience is now dead’. It’s the first of many attempts at humour that barely raise a titter yet alone a full blown laugh. However the statement does actually rather prescient. It wasn’t long before this viewer felt that, if not dead physically, that his brain was feeling numb from the viewing experience that unfolded.

Crammed full of effects work that will make you gasp (for the wrong reasons), stilted dialogue and a pacing that veers to the wrong of speedy, JURASSIC THUNDER is all concept and no budget. If you’re going to make a low budget movie then please do try to make one that sits comfortably within the financial restraints imposed upon it. Directors Milko Davis and Thomas Martwick have fashioned a talkative flick that lacks the action that its poster work would imply, and lots of talking is certainly not what we’d want from a film that pairs gun-wielding Tyrannosaurs with zombies.

There is one joke that hits the spot – someone complaining that a hologram of President Trump appears to the wrong colour (‘he is that colour’ comes the response) – but aside from that the rest of the film is an entertainment-free zone.
